Quick fix
# 1. Stop all Codex/ChatGPT processes first (required)
Get-Process ChatGPT,Codex | Stop-Process -Force
# 2. Install the official MSIX package (use your download path)
Add-AppxPackage -Path C:\Users\<you>\Downloads\ChatGPT-x64.msix
What you will run into
The Codex desktop app is clearly outdated and updating fails: clicking "Update" inside the app errors out (common when registry policies disabled Windows auto-update); the ChatGPT Installer.exe downloaded from the Microsoft Store or the website says "already installed" and does nothing;
double-clicking the official MSIX package shows no progress or silently fails.
Why this happens
| Stage | Mechanism |
|---|---|
| In-app update errors | With Windows auto-update disabled via registry policy, the Codex self-update channel is unavailable |
| Installer.exe says already installed | The MSIX app is already registered; the installer detects the old version but does not silently overwrite it |
| Double-clicking the MSIX does nothing | Package install has no visible progress; if old processes are still running the install fails (reports "running / not closed") |
The fix is to bypass the Store/installer and install the official MSIX package directly with PowerShell Add-AppxPackage.
The Codex desktop app is an MSIX-packaged application; updates go through the "in-app update channel". When Windows update policy (registry) disables automatic updates, that channel is unavailable — not an app bug, but a policy-layer denial.
MSIX's core semantics is "registration by package": once an app is registered, the installer detects the old version but does not silently overwrite it (it must be unregistered/exited first);
double-clicking an MSIX shows no reaction because package installation has no visible progress, and installing a new package fails while the old process is still running.
Deterministic takeaway: on update failure, first check system update policy and whether the app is running; the correct path bypassing Store/installer is PowerShell Add-AppxPackage with the official MSIX package (-ForceApplicationShutdown handles occupied processes);
"double-click does nothing" = check event logs or install from the command line instead of double-clicking repeatedly; fixed diagnostic: policy disabled = use the command-line channel; process occupying = exit before installing.
Step by step
1. Download the official MSIX (verify the official domain) — Required
- x64:
https://persistent.oaistatic.com/codex-app-prod/ChatGPT-x64.msix(~780MB) - arm64:
https://persistent.oaistatic.com/codex-app-prod/ChatGPT-arm64.msix - Official reference:
https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/enterprise/windows-deployment- these links always point to the latest package; content can change daily
2. Make sure no old processes are running — Required
Get-Process ChatGPT,Codex
If anything is listed, close it first: Get-Process ChatGPT,Codex | Stop-Process -Force. Measured on this machine: the Codex desktop app runs 12 ChatGPT processes plus 1 codex CLI process; installing without closing them fails.
3. Install from the command line — Required
Add-AppxPackage -Path C:\Users\<you>\Downloads\ChatGPT-x64.msix
A progress bar appears; failures print the reason (e.g. old version still running).
4. Verify — Required
Get-AppxPackage *ChatGPT* | Select-Object Name, Version
A fresh version number means success; the About page inside the app also shows the new version.
How to confirm it works
Get-AppxPackage *ChatGPT* | Select-Object Name, Version
A fresh Version and the Codex About page showing the new build; the in-app "Update" no longer errors.
The command surface was verified on this machine (Add-AppxPackage available, process check matches the reported scenario); the full install flow was not run because it would modify this machine's live app.
Other environments
| Environment | Notes |
|---|---|
| x64 / arm64 | Pick the MSIX for your CPU architecture |
| Auto-update disabled | In-app updates unavailable; manual MSIX install is the path |
| Old version still running | Add-AppxPackage fails immediately; close processes and retry |
| Not measured | Full MSIX upgrade flow (not executed here to avoid touching the running Codex app) |
Symptom
Codex desktop app is outdated and the in-app updater errors (with Windows auto-update disabled); the ChatGPT Installer.exe from the website/Store says "already installed" without updating; MSIX double-click install does nothing or fails.
Cause
Windows registry policy disabled auto-update, so the Codex in-app update channel is unavailable; when an MSIX app is already registered the Installer.exe does not silently overwrite it; MSIX installs require Add-AppxPackage and all old processes must be fully exited.
Solution
- Download the official MSIX (persistent.oaistatic.com/codex-app-prod/ChatGPT-x64.msix or arm64; verify via learn.chatgpt.com/docs/enterprise/windows-deployment);
- Run
Get-Process ChatGPT,Codex, close everything withStop-Process -Force; - Run
Add-AppxPackage -Path <msix>and watch the progress bar / error message; - Verify with
Get-AppxPackage *ChatGPT*.
Verification Evidence
- Command surface (2026-08-30):
Get-Command Add-AppxPackageis available (Source: Appx) on this machine. - Process check:
Get-Process ChatGPT,Codexreturns 12 ChatGPT processes plus 1 codex process - matches the reported "old version still running fails the install" scenario; the diagnostic command works. - Official URL check: persistent.oaistatic.com/codex-app-prod/ChatGPT-x64.msix / arm64 match learn.chatgpt.com/docs/enterprise/windows-deployment (not downloaded, 780MB).
- Not measured: the full MSIX upgrade flow (would modify this machine's running Codex app, skipped); local repro log 2026-08-30
