Quick fix
# One-liner: install build deps on Debian/Ubuntu, then retry the install
sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y build-essential python3-dev && pip install skillspector
Then rerun the install; if the build fails again, see step 3 for the real compile error.
What you will run into
While pip-installing skillspector, dependency yara-python fails to compile: Failed building wheel for yara-python, error: command 'gcc' failed. You think the package is broken — actually the system lacks the build toolchain.
Why this happens
yara-python has no prebuilt wheel for newer Python (3.13/3.14), so pip must build from source; source builds need gcc/make/python3-dev, and missing any of them fails midway:
pip has two supply levels for a dependency: prebuilt wheels (binary; pip just downloads and unpacks, never touching a compiler) and source builds (no wheel, so pip downloads the source package and invokes gcc on your machine).
For packages with C extensions like yara-python, wheel availability depends on "did the author publish a wheel for your Python version" — Python 3.13/3.14 is too new, no wheel yet, so pip falls back to a source build.
A source build is a full toolchain: gcc (compiles) -> make (build orchestration) -> python3-dev (provides Python.h headers); missing any one fails at its stage.
error: command 'gcc' failed is just the generic header of the compile stage; what's actually missing shows in the tail of the log (the tail holds the first real compile error).
So the diagnostic order is fixed: check whether a wheel exists for your Python version first (the easy path) -> if not, install the toolchain (build-essential + python3-dev) -> if it fails again, read the full log tail and install what's named.
| Prerequisite | Role |
|---|---|
| build-essential (gcc/make) | Compiles C extensions |
| python3-dev | Python headers (Python.h) |
| Matching prebuilt wheel | Avoids building entirely when present (e.g. cp312 has wheels on most platforms) |
Step by step
1. Install build dependencies — Required
sudo apt install build-essential python3-dev
2. Prefer a Python with prebuilt wheels — Required
Official system Python versions (e.g. cp312) have yara-python wheels on most platforms, so builds are rare; source builds are only needed for very new Python.
3. If the build fails again: look at the end of the full log — Required
pip install skillspector 2>&1 | tail -40
The tail is the real compile error: missing headers/libraries → install the named package (e.g. libyara-dev or the matching -dev package).
How to confirm it works
The install log shows the build-success marker (measured output shape):
Building wheel for yara-python ... Successfully built
skillspector --version outputs SkillSpector v2.10.0 (measured closure v3).
Other environments
| Environment | Notes |
|---|---|
| Python 3.14 | yara-python 4.5.4 has no cp314 wheel; measured real source build succeeded (toolchain complete in this environment) |
| Python 3.12 | Prebuilt wheels on most platforms; builds rare |
| Missing gcc | error: command 'gcc' failed → build-essential |
| Missing headers | Install the -dev package named at the end of the compile error |
| Windows | Uses the MSVC toolchain; different failure shape; not measured here |
Symptom
pip install reports Failed building wheel for yara-python / error: command 'gcc' failed.
Cause
yara-python has no prebuilt wheel for newer Python (3.13/3.14), so it builds from source; the build fails when the system lacks the build toolchain (gcc/make/python3-dev).
Solution
- Install build deps:
sudo apt install build-essential python3-dev. - Prefer a Python version with prebuilt wheels (e.g. cp312 has wheels for most platforms, fewer build scenarios).
- If the build fails again, read the real compiler error at the end of the full log (missing headers/libs — install by name).
Verification Evidence
- Web case: CSDN library (Failed building wheel -> build-essential python3-dev, 2026-07).
- Verified in this marketplace: on Python 3.14, yara-python 4.5.4 has no cp314 wheel and genuinely took the source-build path and succeeded (closed loop v3:
Building wheel for yara-python ... Successfully built) — proving the build path exists and this environment's toolchain is complete; machines without the toolchain fail at this step.
