Quick fix
# One-liner: isolated venv install, no pollution of system Python (measured approach here)
python3 -m venv ~/skillspector-venv && ~/skillspector-venv/bin/pip install skillspector && ~/skillspector-venv/bin/skillspector --version
What you will run into
Installing or running skillspector warns about conflicts with already-installed package versions (langchain/openai/pydantic etc.). You're afraid of breaking other projects' environments, so you don't dare install it.
Why this happens
skillspector depends on newer langchain/openai/langgraph families; installing directly into system Python overwrites other projects' old versions:
pip's dependency model is "one package set per environment": inside a single Python environment a package name can have only one version.
When a new install declares versions that conflict with existing packages, pip either overwrites the old ones or refuses outright — there is no "each project keeps its own versions" concept.
That is exactly what venvs are for: a venv is an independent copy of site-packages under a directory, located via the interpreter path, so packages installed into it are visible only to that venv and the system Python's pip list gains nothing.
So the right answer to "I'm afraid of breaking my system environment" is not to install carefully — it's to not install into the system at all: python3 -m venv turns "they overwrite each other" into "they can't see each other".
A quick sanity check: which skillspector should point into the venv's bin directory (measured here: 60+ deps installed into an isolated venv with no conflict).
| Scenario | Problem |
|---|---|
| Direct into system Python | New deps overwrite old packages; other projects affected |
| Existing project lock files | Versions rewritten; project behavior changes |
| Multiple AI tools coexisting | langchain/openai versions pull against each other |
Step by step
1. Create an isolated environment — Required
python3 -m venv ~/skillspector-venv
2. Install into the venv — Required
~/skillspector-venv/bin/pip install skillspector
3. Use the in-venv command — Required
~/skillspector-venv/bin/skillspector scan <target dir>
4. For severe conflicts use pipx/uv — Required
Manage isolated environments with pipx/uv — one environment per tool, no interference.
How to confirm it works
Install completes inside the venv (measured output shape):
Successfully installed ... skillspector-2.10.0
skillspector --version outputs SkillSpector v2.10.0 (measured here: isolated venv install of 60+ deps with no conflict); system Python untouched (no additions in pip list).
Other environments
| Environment | Notes |
|---|---|
| venv isolation | Measured 60+ deps without conflict; system Python unaffected |
| Upgrading existing packages | Back up project lock files before upgrading (requirements/uv.lock etc.) |
| pipx / uv | One isolated env per tool; good for severe conflicts |
| Existing projects affected | With venv/pipx isolation, original project lock files need no changes |
Symptom
Install or runtime shows version conflicts with already-installed packages (langchain/openai/pydantic etc.).
Cause
skillspector depends on the newer langchain/openai/langgraph family; old versions from other projects in the system get overwritten.
Solution
- Isolated install:
python3 -m venv <dir>then install into the venv (method verified in this marketplace); do not pollute system Python. - Or upgrade the corresponding packages per the warnings; back up project lock files (requirements/uv.lock etc.) before upgrading.
- For heavy conflicts use pipx/uv to manage isolated environments.
Verification Evidence
- Web case: CSDN library (dependency version conflicts, 2026-07).
- Verified in this marketplace: isolated venv installed 60+ deps without conflict (closed loop v3:
Successfully installed ... skillspector-2.10.0); system Python unaffected.
